The Blues are considering a summer move for the experienced Croatian midfielder
Chelsea are reportedly set to launch a bid to sign Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic - but not until the summer.
According to Sport , the Blues are closely monitoring the situation at the Nou Camp with Frenkie De Jong set to join the club in the summer.
The arrival of the Dutch youngster at Barcelona could see the club look to move on the likes of Rakitic, who was crucial in Croatia's journey to the World Cup Final last summer.
Maurizio Sarri is reportedly keen to bring the talented 30-year-old to Stamford Bridge, although he may struggle to tempt him to leave the Spanish giants.
Rakitic has been linked with Chelsea
Rakitic recently responded to speculation regarding his Barcelona future, specifically after the signing of De Jong, touted as their long-term answer in midfield.
But he insisted he is happy at the club and not looking to move, meaning Chelsea may have a tough battle even if Barcelona are willing to sell as has been reported.
"If I am here [at Barcelona], it's to play. If anything has to change, we will speak. I have a lot of confidence. I know what I can give. I know who I am," Rakitic said.
"I want to be here and, if I can renew, to be here for even more years. I am really happy here, everyone knows it, above all the president. I have nothing else to say.
"I am 30 and I am in the best moment of my career. I want to enjoy football and enjoy Barça."
The Croatian says he's currently happy at Barcelona
There could also be added complications for Chelsea amid talk they could be facing a transfer ban.
Fifa's disciplinary committee are investigating their dealings with over 100 youth players from overseas and could punish them with a ban on new signings if they're found guilty of breaking the rules.
